Shop owner intends to enjoy life BY KATIE KIENAST Commercial-News Ted Baer, originally from the Danville area, is the owner of Baer’s Time Shop in the Village Mall. His shop offers watch repair services and carries a selection of timepieces.
But the time is not the only thing shoppers will find in Baer’s shop.
The walls of his shop contain photographs that highlight some of the many experiences Baer has had in his lifetime.
Baer has lived in New York and California.
Before he got into the timepiece business, he worked in broadcasting for more than 30 years.
During his broadcasting career, Baer was a radio show host, did voices for commercials and even worked for Merv Griffin. Full Story |

DACC center revels in Meis donation BY ANNA HERKAMP Commercial-News Preschool-age children rushed back and forth on rubber chips at the Child Development Center playground at Danville Area Community College on Thursday, vying for a position on one of the new slides.
The center’s charges have been enjoying some new equipment, which was paid for through a donation from some generous benefactors.
As the kids played, college and community dignitaries gathered to recognize the generosity of Alma and Henri Meis. Their child development fund was set up by Ellen and Lee Metzendorf, the Meis’s daughter and son-in-law. Full Story |

Online votes needed for local musicians BY BARBARA GREENBERG CHICAGO — Two former Danville men stand poised on the brink of success, but they need some help from their hometown friends to make the leap.
“It’s an easy, easy favor to fulfill,” Ben Hunt said. “(Our band) The Dirty Rooks has a chance to play at Lollapalooza.
“Really.”
For those unfamiliar with the music festival, Lollapalooza started in 1991, before Hunt and fellow band member Grant Ghol-son started high school. The event’s popularity continues. People who grew up in the years since then sometimes are called the “Lollapalooza generation.” Full story |

Bismarck festivities to begin Friday Festival filled with softball, food, fireworks BY CHRIS HIGHTOWER Commercial-News BISMARCK — This weekend, the Men’s Club of Bismarck will be celebrating the Fourth of July at Lions Club Park, and all are welcome to partake in the festivities. “We will have entertainment for all,” Men’s Club President Larry Hill said. “It’s a great time, and thanks to our supporters, we have one of the best fireworks displays in the area.” The Men’s Club has been putting on its fireworks display for the last six years, and for the past two years its members have built upon that to create a weekend-long event. This year, the festivities start on Friday with the start of the Twilight & Minor girls softball tournament. On Saturday, there will be bounce house games for children beginning at noon and concluding at 8 p.m., as well as the conclu-sion of the tournament. Read full story here |
